First of all, the timeless advice for anybody about to do any kind of exercise still applies on a Wii Fit: Warm up first! This sounds kind of obvious of course, but you'd be very surprised at how many people will simply jump into the most advanced or the most challenging games. This is especially common in the Wii Fit because wince the exercises are made up to look like games, people think they don't 'count' as actual exercise, but they do. You need to start with slow, easy effort and then build up to more challenge and intensity over a period of at least 10 minutes, or you could end up with multiple strained or pulled muscles, and that doesn't feel good.
Secondly, don't go into the most challenging games at all during the first few times you try to use it, even if you're warming up first. If you're out of shape, your body is going to need several rest periods after exerting itself before it's up to tackling the hardest exercises. Again, because it's made up as a game, people think these basic factors don't apply, but they most certainly do, and in some ways they apply even more because of the Wii Fit's nature than in spite of it.
Finally, and most importantly, avoid all kind of extremely repetitive motions wherever you can. Do you really think that a sedentary couch potato can stand up and hit 1,000 tennis balls, or do 1,000 turns of a hula hoop and nothing will happen just because it's a game? Think again! Repetitive motion injuries are one of the leading emergency room situations these days. Always take a break after 10 minutes or so of doing the same motion over and over, or you could end up in an ER too.
